Clearing snow and ice in public places
the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has directed the public to information on clearing snow and ice in public places.
In response to the weather warnings, the HSE has directed the public to the Government's "snow code" - advice and tips on clearing snow and ice from public places - on the Direct Gov website.
The website dispels the myth that the public should not clear snow and ice from pavements outside their homes, businesses or public spaces, for fear of legal responsibility should someone slip and fall.
The snow code offers tips such as clearing the snow and ice early in the day when the snow is softer and easier to shovel, and using salt or sand, not water. The website warns that using water to melt the snow may cause it to refreeze and turn to hazardous black ice.
The website also advises the public to take care in moving the shovelled snow, so it doesn't block people's paths or drains.
The snow code can be accessed here.
