Lord Youngs Review of Health & Safety is Published
You may be aware that the government has been reviewing its approach to health and safety with the aim to have a 'common sense approach to safety'. The review covers perceptions of health and safety and the so-called compensation culture in the UK, 'rogue' health and safety consultants and the red-tape 'burden'.
Lord Young's recommendations include:
-
To simplify the risk assessment procedure for low hazard workplaces such as offices, classrooms and shops
-
Professionalise health and safety consultants with a qualification requirement that all consultants should be accredited to professional bodies (consultants at Forefront H&S Solutions are both accredited and qualified)
-
To simplify the process that schools and similar organisations undertake before taking children on trips
-
The current raft of health and safety regulations should be consolidated into a single set of accessible regulations
-
Re-examine the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR), through which businesses record workplace accidents and send returns to a centralised body, and amend them by extending to seven days the period before an injury or accident needs to be reported (rather than the current over 3 day requirement)
-
Police officers and firefighters should not be at risk of investigation or prosecution under health and safety legislation when engaged in the course of their duties if they have put themselves at risk as a result of committing a heroic act
